This first chapter will cover the London, which is a very solid opening choice with simple plans and an easy-to-remember setup. The studies focus on Black’s setup with …Nf6/…e6. 

Safety and development are our goals in the London System, and we will spice things up with either kingside attacks (study 1) or queenside expansions (study 3).

Chapter 1: The London System (d5/e6/Nf6 setups from Black)

This chapter covered Black’s ...Nf6/…e6 setup against our London and the different setups we could go for if Black does not develop their dark-squared bishop or chooses to develop it early. 

All in all, this was a nice introduction to the London system and the main ideas behind this opening’s most popular line.


In Chapter 2, we will cover Black’s setup against our London, where the move …e6 is not played and instead, our opponent goes for a quick c5-push. 

Against our standard setup, after 3.e3, …c5 is the third most popular move! 

Many important lines revolve around whether Black trades on d4 (...cxd4) or advances with …c5.

Chapter 2: The London - Black Plays c5 Without e6

After going through this chapter, you should be familiar with good responses against Black’s early …c5 push, which is the third most popular approach! 

Also, by now it should be easier to get into positions with known plans even though Black goes for a different setup.

Chapter 3 will explore a nice weapon against Black’s very early …c5-push. Black can go for it after we bring our bishop to f4. It doesn’t happen often in games, but 2…c5 is the engine’s first recommendation! 

The second study focuses on dxc5 capture, and the third revolves around a more traditional setup with c3.

Chapter 3: Bonus Weapons Against Early c5's

Right in the first study, you were introduced to a nice way to spice things up after Black chooses to push …c5 on the second move.

There is a reason that the setup in the third study is called “The Stonewall”! It is characterized by excellent control over the center and Black’s inability to create reasonable pawn breaks.

Let’s get right into the fourth chapter! 

Here, we focus on Black’s development of the light-squared bishop. For example, study 1 showcases Black’s setup with 5…Bf5 which, after 5.Nd2, is the most popular move! 

The next two studies should help you understand the difference between …Bf5 and …Bg4. 

Lastly, we’ll take a look at Black copying us with 2…Bf5, which happens around 13% of the time.

Chapter 4: Black Plays an Early Bf5/Bg4

This chapter was a nice overview of the different light-squared bishop moves Black can go for from the beginning of the London. 

At first glance, it might look like there is a little to no difference between …Bg4 and …Bf5, but the resulting positions have very different plans, which by now should be pretty easy to understand.

This fifth chapter deals with Black’s idea of developing their knight to c6 very early, blocking their own c-pawn!

I won't sugarcoat it: this is bad. Black wants an early e5, but we can often get a better position because the c-pawn is important and cannot be left out.

This chapter went over Black’s quick …Nc6 development and taught you how to respond to it with similar and already well-known London ideas. 

We’ve also gone over the idea of …Nc6 and …f6 with the idea of …e5, but our setup has proved Black’s development ineffective!

In Chapter 6, we’ll look at a few “random” responses by Black to our London setup. Meaning, Black doesn’t rely on theoretical moves, but rather on setups.

This doesn’t mean that we will change our plans drastically! We are playing the London, so a solid setup with concrete plans still prevails.

Chapter 6: Other Moves after 1...d5 in the London (Black Plays 2...c6/f6/g6)

In this chapter, you’ve learned how to challenge Black’s random setups against the London. We’ve covered Black’s setup with 2…c6, 2…g6 and 2…f6, which are all answered with 3.e3. 

These random moves no longer surprise you, and using the standard London opening approach, the resulting positions are very comfortable to play.

In chapter 7 we will take a look at yet another setup that Black might opt for against our London. It is the …Nf6/…e6/…c5 while going for …b6/..Bb7 fianchetto (hence called the “Queen’s Indian”) covered in the first two studies. 

3…c5 is the most common move, happening in nearly 50% of the games!

Chapter 7: Fighting the Nimzo/Queen's Indian Setup vs The London

In this chapter, we’ve examined the Black structure of …d5/…c5 and …b6, both appearing from different move orders. White often replies to this setup with a preparation of an e4-pawn break. 

We’ve also covered  3…b6 without Black going …c5 later, but the third study showed a nice way to gain space in the center and create a potential attack.


Welcome to the eighth chapter! 

In the last chapter, we’ve discussed the “Queen’s Indian” setup, so now we’ll take a look at a “King’s Indian” setup with 2…g6 played in roughly 30% of the games. 

The studies are divided by Black’s decision of transposing into the Pirc or stopping e4 with …d5, opting for a Grunfeld approach. 

Nevertheless, Black will have a kingside fianchetto, which means that we will be able to create some sort of an attack, as shown in the first study!

This chapter taught you how to deal with a kingside fianchetto by Black, which is a popular approach, since 2…g6 is played 30% of the game. You are ready to play both against setups with …d6 and …d5!

Welcome to chapter nine! 

The first study focuses on Black’s 2…c5, which is played 15% of the time and ends up in positions reminding the King’s Indian defense. We will be able to gain space in the center and find great squares for all of our pieces. 

Study 2 will examine a few unpopular moves like …d6, …c6, …b6, and Nc6, which aren’t very popular, but Black might go for them trying to play something unorthodox.

Welcome to Chapter 10 and the first Chapter of the Trompowsky! 

The Trompowsky is a little bit different from the London since we bring the bishop one square further — to g5.  It is used to challenge Black’s knight on f6. 

Black’s most played reply, 2…e6 occurs in roughly 30% of the games. The second most popular move is analyzed in the second study, which is …Ne4, attacking our bishop. 

The last two studies deal with 2…d5.
